Installing new vanity/sink – Need sink drain trap help?

I am currently working on a small renovation project in my bathroom. I just tried to start installing a new vanity/sink and I realized the drain does not match up to the trap. The pipe extending from the trap (waste pipe?) seems extremely long (about 3 inches too long). I was able to remove the trap, but don’t know if I can remove the pipe behind it. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on a way to solve this. I am thinking I may have to call a plumber, but would rather not if I don’t have to.
This is what the current drain looks like, I am not sure what an offset is as I have no prior experience with plumbing. Here is a photo of how it currently looks http://revelatecreative.com/post/drain.jpg
Everyone keeps mentioning to cut the pipe, the current pipe is metal and has a bend that aims toward the ground, so I am not sure if it is possible to cut it.

Ive come across this problem many times. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle. Is there enough room to cut the long pipe so that it fits snugly in the p-trap? That would be the best answer to the problem. If not, I’ve had to use a flexible tailpiece to make it fit. This is an “accordion” type tailpiece that can be flexed a few inches to fit. Don’t use this type of tailpiece horizontally, only vertically. Or can you cut the pipe coming through the wall and add an adapter so that the p-trap ends up in the right spot? It takes a little trial and error, but you should be able to get it just where you want it. Don’t worry if the pop-up assembly gets in the way. You can always cut the excess away later. And remember to keep the right pitch to the pipes so the only standing water is in the p-trap. And this may sound silly, but make sure the p-trap is going the right way, and isn’t turned around. I’ve come across this many times also.
Good luck.

EDIT

Don’t cut it!
See if one of those p-traps they make for pedestal sinks will work for you. They’re made to fit closer to the wall.
