My husband has duplex. House his separate property. I use downstairs for business only. Can I deduct remodel
This is where I spend most of my life with computers, etc when not in court or in depos to produce transcripts, etc. Downstairs built in ’50s. Everything was old. Had to redo plumbing, pipes disintegrated. Live upstairs, but I spend most of time when home downstairs working. Fairly small area and kitchen is part of office (same room) with a bathroom and storage facility in other room where I keep supplies. Used solely for my job. No T.V. here just computer equipment, reference material, etc. Can be used to hold depos as I’m listed in source book that goes out to other reporters/attys. Just spent $25,000 and wonder if writeoff if I am to amortize same say over 5 years. That’s about all I can think of
Assuming this is a USA question – You need to goto the IRS.gov site, and look up the rules that determine what is and what isn’t, a home office.
Certainly, it sounds as if you can at least deduct a portion of your household expenses and utilities, for business. I believe it is in direct ratio to how much of the home is actually used for business, and how much is for “living space”. And, believe it or not, the IRS will actually help you with this, if you need to talk to someone in person…their phone number is on their site.
If youve been doing this awhile, I’m surprised your accountant, or tax preparer hasnt already informed you of possible deductions. I know the Turbo Tax software will alert you to a deduction like this too.
Good Luck
