How to fix water damaged floors?
We are doing some renovations to our garage, and the floor is wood. Not like hardwood, like wooden boards. The rainwater has leaked under it and rotted the wood… I am wondering how I fix this. The spot where the garage is is lower than the land around it, so the rainwater always goes under the wood floor. How would we fix this so that when we put in a new floor, the rainwater wont rot it?
If possible, can you grade the land so water goes away from the building, not under it?
If that cannot be done, you’ll have to do whatever you can to make the rainwater drain away from the building. First, put gutters on the garage so the water is guided through the downspouts and extended from the building to deposit water in another direction. Secondly, you may have to install a drainage system in the earth around the garage so the water is guided to flow away from the building.
When replacing wood on the garage floor just be sure it is pressure treated. Moist wood is a breeding ground for carpenter ants and other insects that you do not want to invite to have your garage for a nesting ground or a dinner hall.
